NEWSLETTER – March 2015

President’s Message

With the winter we have had (and are still having!) I'm sure the thought of the upcoming golf season is a welcome one for all of us! On behalf of the LIGA Executive Committee, we thank you for your support of our Championships. We are looking forward to another highly successful year in 2015.

It is a pleasure to announce the opening of tournament entries for 2015. Our schedule is highlighted by the LI Open at The Creek and the LI Amateur at Southward Ho. Our sincere thanks goes out to all the golf clubs and courses hosting an LIGA event this year. We sincerely appreciate the support of our member clubs.

Best wishes to all for a successful season and let's hope we are able to get out there soon!

Michael J. Sullivan

President, Long Island Golf Association

2015 Tournament Schedule -- Tournament Entry Now Open

The 2015 Tournament Schedule was posted on our website in January. Click here to view the complete 2015 schedule.

In addition to the LI Open and Amateur mentioned above, some of the great venues for this year include Mill River for the Mid-Am, Garden City Country Club for the Junior, and Laurel Links for the Senior Open. And of course, we are again fortunate to have permanent hosts for: the Richardson at Seawane, the Hebron at Bethpage Black, the Women's Stroke Play at Bethpage Red, the Senior Amateur at Old Westbury and the Sands at North Shore.

With the support of these fine Clubs and their members, 2015 promises to be a great year for competitive golf on Long Island.

Tournament Entry Process for 2015

Approximately 90% of our entries last year came through the “Online Tournament Entry” link on our website ( with entry fees paid by credit card. Players preferring to pay by check may print an Entry Form from the website and mail it in with a check. We no longer mail Entry Forms to member Clubs but will do so to an individual upon request.

How to Request a Tee Time

The old paper entry form had one advantage: it allowed us to ask for tee time preferences for every player.

Today, we still try to honor all tee time requests but the request must be done by e-mail to Jon Silverberg at prior to the closing date for entries. Requests made after pairings have been posted cannot be accommodated.

Click here for a link to our tee time request notice on the website.

P.J. Boatwright, Jr. Internship Opportunity

A very important part of the LIGA staff is our P.J. Boatwright, Jr., intern. The intern plays a key support role for our golf tournaments and also assists with the Long Island Caddie Scholarship Fund. Partially funded by a grant from the USGA, this position is full-time for June through September and part-time for the months of May, October and November. It is usually filled by a recent college graduate with an interest in golf.

We have several fine candidates for 2015 but will still be accepting applications for another week or so. Referrals from our tournament players and friends are always welcome. Click here for a link to the job description and complete information on our website.

Tournament Committee – a great way to "give back" to golf

The Long Island Golf Association could not run our outstanding schedule of tournaments without the support of a great group of volunteers who officiate our events.

While we are proud of that dedicated group, we are always looking for additional golf enthusiasts who would like to support our events and give something back to this great game.

If you have any interest in being a tournament volunteer by spending a few days or half-days at our tournament venues, please contact our Executive Director, Doug Vergith at 516-746-1015 or by e-mail at .
